The world of Overwatch is simple, it is based on Earth and set some time in the future. Just like our world, there is terrorism and war, just like our world there are advancements in technology, only these advancements have seen vehicles that can hover, plasma rifles, and giant robots that can easily tower over any three storey building. It’s these robots and many others that would be the main reason for the eventual rise of the peacekeeping group, Overwatch.
Omnica Coropration created what are called ‘omniums’, factories which had the purpose of creating robots called omnics that would be used to help with the world’s economy. Omnics have artificial intelligence, able to improve upon themselves. However the omniums would start to break down and with an investigation, it showed that Omnica was committing fraud and the promises they made about the omniums having great output and growth wasn’t something that would ever be achieved. Due to this, the company was dismantled and all of their omniums around the world were shut down, ceasing omnic production.
There were A.I’s around the world called God Program’s which had the ability to take control of omnics. The God Programs were malicious and wanted to see humans killed and so the Omnic Crisis started. The God Programs infected the omniums and brought them back online with the intent to create more omnics, but militarized and with the intent to wipe out humans. Existing technology wasn’t safe from being infected and saw massive walking machines used in construction turned into a deadly weapon.
Parts of the world felt as though they were ready to fight against the omnics, however due to the omnic’s self-improving programming, countries were often outwitted. Not only that, but the omnics had no demands, they were simply attacking humans. Russia was one of the countries that was able to fend off the robot armies and shut down the omniums and their manufacturing.
The United Nations brought a small group of people together that were making progress against the omnics in their respective territories. This group would become known as Overwatch. They would be the reason that the Omnic Crisis came to an end and that the God Program’s were secured.
Despite the Crisis ending, there is still massive conflict between some humans and the omnics. Those in Australia had been given the land of the Outback as a peace offering, which happened to displace the residents already there. The humans banded together and formed the Australian Liberation Front which saw them fight with the omnics and eventually the Omnic fusion core was destroyed with has left the Outback saturated in radiation and resembling Mad Max a million times over.
With the Crisis over, Overwatch then became an organisation that was centered on global peace. The group had grown in numbers.
Overwatch was, however, not meant to last as many felt the organisation should have tighter restrictions and be monitored a lot closer. Rumours begun to fly around and eventually it got to such a level that members had to leave. One of the most shocking parts was perhaps when Blackwatch was revealed to the public, Overwatch’s secret division which dealt in apparent assassinations, kidnappings and so on. There was an explosion at headquarters in Switzerland that completely destroyed it. It came about due to a fight between two members of Overwatch, Jack Morrison and Gabriel Reyes. Both were reported as dead. Overwatch was ended. It is speculated, through interactions, that Angela may have played some part in Reapers wraith like appearance (Reaper is actually Reyes who was supposedly killed) as she has the ability to resurrect people and it perhaps went wrong with Reyes after the destruction of the Swiss HQ.
The world is thriving, but there are still a lot of bad things going on. Russia is seeing a second omnic Crisis, Numbani, a place where omnics and humans co-exist peacefully has cancelled their celebration due to an anonymous threat. It is also during this time that there are confirmed sightings of former Overwatch members during incidents around the world and that they have not been sanctioned by the UN.
Within King’s Row in England, resembling old London in some ways, the tension between humans and omnics is the highest in perhaps the world and was where the assassination of Tekhartha Mondatta happened. Mondatta was an omnic and leader of a spiritual group of omnics called the Shambali that believed they had souls and were equal to humans.
Angela clearly went to medical school as before she became a part of Overwatch she achieved the position of head of surgery at a rather distinguished hospital in Switzerland. Not only is Angela from a medical field, but also a scientific one as well. As a scientist she would look for ways in which technology could help the sick and injured and found a breakthrough in nanobiology. Angela had discovered a way in which nanobiology could be applied to those in life-threatening condition that would vastly improve their overall condition, bringing them out of the red. If not healing them completely.
During the Omnic Crisis, Angela’s parents were killed. It’s unclear how old she was, but it may be safe to assume that this happened when she was rather young. Their deaths at a young age would have an impact on her views regarding violence, especially losing them during a war and having to continue living through violence within the world. Their death is perhaps what also drives Angela to want to help those that are hurt.
Due to Angela’s advancements and her breakthrough in the medical field, she was approached by Overwatch with an opportunity to become a member. At first, she was apprehensive about joining them as they had rather violent ways of keeping the peace which she was firmly against. However, she came around as she saw it as an opportunity to continue helping people she might otherwise no be able to thanks to Overwatch’s new global reach. Angela became their head of medical research and was based within their Zurich headquarters in her home country. She was also a field medic and first responder which meant when a team would go out on a mission, Angela was there to keep them safe to the best of her ability. Because she was on the front line so often, she was afforded the time and ability to develop and create the Valkyrie swift-response suit which had a rather angelic appearance. This would offer her protection and allow her to fly close to her teammates in order to keep them either healed up or give them a power boost with her caduceus staff. She also adopted the codename of Mercy which would also go along with the angel theme that seemed to be going on with her.
Sometime during her time in Overwatch, she became responsible for saving Genji Shimada’s life and keeping him alive after agents brought him in. Due to her scientific background and the fact she created her own battle suit, Angela would also be the one to help develop Genji’s body, as much of it had to be rebuilt through ‘cyberization’.
Angela had noticed that the relationship between Reyes and Morrison was breaking down due to Morrison being promoted to strike commander rather than Reyes (who was the one that took issue with it). She had tried to help them reconcile but nothing worked and things got worse. And then the destruction of the Swiss HQ happened. It isn’t known if she was there during the buildings destruction or if she was simply lucky enough not to die, if she wasn’t then there is little doubt she would have gone there in some sort of relief effort. The UN held an investigation into the cause of the destruction and called on Angela for an interrogation at a hearing where she told them about the rift between the two men and that nothing could have prevented it from happening.
Since Overwatch had ended, Angela had been dedicating herself to continuing her work, by helping those in need in war torn areas around the world. She would still don the Valkryie suit whenever needed. She is in Iraq when she receives a call from Winston about the activation of Overwatch (although not sanctioned by an official body), and it is hours after that call and Mondatta’s assassination that Angela’s pull point will be from.
PERSONALITY:
There isn’t very much known about Mercy, but from some things seen in cinematics and her interactions with other characters as well as her history, a fair assessment of her personality can be done.
Angela is a very compassionate person who wants to help those that are in need. She wants to make sure that those who are hurt are healed to the best of her ability. Apart from being a medic, we see this compassion come through with her interaction with Genji, the man she helped who was close to death. Angela asks him how he is, since he had been through a difficult transformation. She sounds genuinely interested about her old patient who she is perhaps on friendly terms with as they would have spent a lot of time together during his recovery.
She is clearly capable of being able to work under extremely stressful situations as she had become head of surgery at a well establish hospital, as well as working on the frontline at war torn places and attack sites.
Angela is innovative and intelligent, having a clear grasp of technology that is present within her time, as she was able to have a breakthrough in ‘applied nanobiology’ and creating her Valkyrie suit. She may be blessed with a youthful appearance, or she may have used/created something that keeps her looking young, as when she talks to Mei, they both mentioned how the other hasn’t aged since they last say each other. Mei was cryogenically frozen for a number of years.
She isn’t afraid to be confrontational and voice her opinions, although she prefers to be more of a pacifist, only using a weapon in self-defence. She is against violence and will let people know if she disapproves of their choices when those choices are acted out, just like with her supervisors at Overwatch. However, despite disagreeing with the overall method, Angela can recognise when there is a situation that would be beneficial to her that would mean she has access to helping more people. For example, in Mask or Menace, she wouldn’t agree with a lot of the governments choices, or the fact that there is still a war going on that was supposed to end years ago, but she would be registered in order to look after people and make sure they are healed on sanctioned/unsanctioned missions.
Angela appears to be very approachable in how she carries herself, which may have something to do with her career choice. But it is also seen in some of her poses throughout the game where it looks like she could have some fun. We also see this in a picture Winston has in the animated short Recall, where Angela is with Torbjörn and they are dressed up for Halloween with Angela as a witch.
POWER:
In Overwatch, Mercy has a staff that has the ability to switch between healing and giving characters a power boost as long as they’re in range.
Mercy’s powers would reflect her staff where for one power slot, she would be able to heal people with self-generated energy in the form of a beam if they are at range (though a limit of perhaps 10 feet with her healing rate being reduced the further away someone is in that range. It isn’t an instantaneous heal, but a gradual rate that would be able to heal cuts and scrapes in seconds but gunshots, stabbings or broken bones would take longer.
The same would apply for her power boost ability (10% damage increase) which would take the second slot. This would have a much shorter duration. (I’m thinking maybe 10 seconds and she would only use it if she thinks it’s needed like in a rescue situation).
Both of these abilities will have a drain on her and won’t be able to be a constant stream she can generate from her staff (which she will have, but it won’t work).
For the third power slot, she can summon her Valkyrie suit. Her suit offers her some protection and is able to fly short distances, it also offers her the ability to slow down her descent if she falls or jumps from a great height.
